High School Seniors Clothing Ideas

Choosing your outfits is one of the most fun parts of senior photos! It’s a great opportunity to help shape the overall vibe and feel of your session—and you get to play around with how you want to look! Whether you’re going for laid-back and natural, bold and edgy, or a little bit of everything, your clothing choices help tell your story. This is your chance to show off your personality, style, and maybe even a glimpse of what’s next for you. Let’s make it fun, true to you, and totally photo-ready! Start with what you love! Pick outfits that reflect your style and personality. If you wouldn’t wear it to hang out with friends, then move onto something else. At the same time keeping in mind that you don’t want to show up in sweat pants and a shirt with holes in it. Think about colors you like and that look good on you. And think about comfort, just not sweat pant comfort. If you really are a sweat pant kid, what would you wear on a more special casual occasion? And if you ever need help picking something, I can help!

Bring a few options.  I always recommend you bring more outfits than you plan to wear.  I have had a few mishaps with clothing, so it is always better to have more. And you never know, we could run into a problem with the location or something new at the location and one of your extra outfits would be perfect!  When you are picking what to wear think casual, a bit more dressy and something bold to show off your more wild side!  And then pick a few extra favorites to bring along.

When you are starting to think about different outfits, think color!  What colors look good on you?  Or make your eyes pop?  What are your favorite colors?  I prefer solid colors or subtle patterns, but I am not going to say no if you show up with a brightly colored bold patterned outfit if that is who you are.  This isn’t about me, it is all about you.  And if you choose an outfit that is loud and bit crazy, also bring a solid colored shirt or at least something a little less over the top, just to balance out your wild side!  If you are not this big color person, try earth tones, jewel tones and neutrals.  But never discount black or white, they are classic for a reason!

Shoes, hats and jewelry are great additions to your outfit!  Sneakers, boots or bare feet – these are all fantastic options.  And if you have a pair of dress shoes with a bright color on the bottom, I will be in heaven!  I love those small little details!  Hats are so much fun!  But not necessarily a baseball hat, sorry baseball hat lovers!  Unless there is something so special or amazing about that hat.  I love floppy hats or a cowboy hat, they can say so much about a person.  And they make for fantastic props! And finally jewelry – even for guys, can really make an outfit!  Leather bracelets or a special necklace are great options for the guys – if you have other ideas I am open to it!  For the girls, bigger the better.  Those small sweet little earrings look cute close up, but they don’t pop in photos.  So think big! Layering jewelry is so much fun!  Layered necklaces and multiple bracelets always look great! We may have to pay attention to certain jewelry and what they look like as we move into different poses. We don’t want twisted necklaces or out of place earrings.

Layers – one of my favorite things!  Just don’t go overboard!  But a nice vest or a casual denim jacket are great additions to your outfit.  I am a sucker for wraps and kimonos too!  I even have some if you want to borrow one.  These work great if you really want a more revealing top, that way you get some with the wrap AND the top.  I always do some with just the top too, so no worries about not getting what you want.  The yearbook appreciates you being in dress code, so this is a fantastic way to do that! The wraps can be so much fun and add some movement to your photos.  If you are going to do a flannel (you must know I have strong opinions about flannels), please don’t do dark colors.  The red and black or blue and black is so distracting in pictures.  I would prefer that we are all looking at your face.  And if you must have a flannel, there are some great options like lighter colored or similar colored flannels.  There are some fun flannels that are repurposed by bleaching them or adding some different fabrics.  I think these can be fun and the focus stays on you and not your clothing. One fun thing to think about layers is having different fabrics, it adds a bit of texture and depth to the photo.

My last tips – iron your clothes!  Sometimes I have a spray wrinkle remover, but in the summer it doesn’t always travel well.  And there is nothing I can do to make your clothes not wrinkly.  Also, avoid logos or text, it is distracting in photos.  It also dates your photos quickly.  You may love that sports figure now, but if they do something not savory next year you may not want them on your shirt anymore.

Sage's Senior Pictures, Boulder

When I first showed up for Sage’s senior session, I just knew it was going to be something special. She was a little shy at first, but right away I could tell what a sweet and genuine young lady she is. And once she warmed up, she started to shine—it was such a joy to capture! The locations she chose were absolutely perfect, and they fit her so well. And then, as if the day knew how amazing Sage is, the sun came out just for her. It had been hiding behind the clouds for quite a while, but suddenly it burst through, lighting up her gorgeous hair and giving everything this beautiful, glowy warmth. It honestly felt magical, and I couldn’t have been more excited. Photographing Sage was such an honor. She’s kind, authentic, and absolutely radiant—I just adored every moment of her session! She has the greatest smile! I love these in the water!  It was such a beautiful day! I love this one!  It is just magical! Her and her brother are so cute! I love these in the grasses!...

Avery Senior Pictures, Denver Botanic Gardens

Avery is one of my incredible Senior Influencers, and she totally rocked her session! From the very beginning, she was ready to go!  Every pose I put her in, she made look amazing — it made photographing her an absolute joy. We started at the Denver Botanic Gardens, which was the perfect backdrop for her session. Everywhere we turned there were stunning plants, colorful flowers, and hidden little corners. Avery looked so natural — it was like the gardens were showing off just for her! After exploring the gardens, we headed over to Cheesman Park to slow things down a bit. The vibe there was more relaxed, with gorgeous light. It gave us the perfect mix of elegance and laid-back charm, and Avery’s personality shone through every single shot.   This session was such a fun combination of vibrant and chill, and Avery made it all look effortless. I can’t wait to share more from her senior year as one of my Influencers—she’s truly a star in front of the camera! I just l...

Grace Senior Pictures, Boulder Co

Sometimes the best things are worth the wait—and Grace’s senior session was definitely one of those moments. After rescheduling thanks to Colorado’s unpredictable rain (seriously, the rain wasn’t acting the way it’s supposed to!), we finally landed the most beautiful day . There was just the right amount of sparkle in the air—it was perfect. Grace is such a delightfully beautiful young lady, inside and out. Her energy is gentle but radiant, and from the moment she showed up, she was so excited to be in front of the camera. That kind of enthusiasm? It’s contagious—and honestly, I was just as excited as she was! We had a great time exploring by the creek, Chautauqua and the top of Flagstaff   Mountain and soaking in that golden light, and creating portraits that felt so her. And then…I brought out the mylar. 😄 I had this fun, artsy idea to play with reflections and light using sheets of mylar—something a little different, a little sparkly, and totally dreamy. Turns out...
