People always ask me what the hardest part of photographing is and other than all the "business" things that I hate to do, it is hands down wind! Check out my video here (I was actually really impressed with some of the images! I really love them!) I can deal with cold, except when there are little ones that their faces turn red right away. But I'm not usually doing pictures in the cold, so it doesn't come up much. I can deal with the heat, it is hard on everyone, but I try to keep everyone in the shade as much as possible and with water we can do it for a short amount of time. Rain and snow usually don't last that long and hats and umbrellas make for a memorable session. But wind! It can show up whenever it wants. It can come in fast and leave just as fast. It can be gusty and then we have to stand around and wait for the 3 second calm spot. It can just blow and blow and blow so much so that we have to reschedule.
If somone has long hair, the wind just ruins it all! Especially if it's a girl and she has curled her hair! Then we have to brush it and often times it brushes the curls out. It is very disappointing! Even with short hair, the wind makes people squint and makes them crabby. If I know it will be windy before we go, I will reschedule, it's just not worth the crabby, uncomfortableness that wind creates. With rain and snow, I will wait until an hour or so before, they usually stop or slow down enough to do a session.
And with all that said, as I was putting this slideshow together, I realized how many of my favorite images were because of the wind 😂 I'm not sure if it's how hard we had to work to get something or if it's the sheer chaos of being uncomfortable and irritated as we're being whipped in the face with stinging hair. I still dislike wind and prefer a light breeze. But next time the wind picks up, I won't be groaning so loud.
